Description

★ An unusually complete zuz or denarius from the Bar Kochba Revolt ★

JUDAEA, Bar Kochba Revolt. 132-135 CE. Zuz or Denarius (Silver, 20 mm, 3.00 g, 1 h), undated (year 3 = 134/5). 'Shim'on' (in Hebrew) Grape bunch on vine. Rev. 'For the Freedom of Jerusalem' (in Hebrew) Two upright trumpets. Hendin 1431. Meshorer 277. Mildenberg 198. An unusually complete example, rare thus. Traces of overstriking, otherwise, good very fine.

From a Swiss collection, privately purchased from Münzen & Medaillen in the 1990s (with original flip).

This coin was overstruck on a denarius of Domitian, with traces of the undertype still visible on both sides of the coin.
