BRUTTIUM. Rhegion. Circa 420-415/0 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 23 mm, 17.11 g, 4 h). Facing head of a lion. Rev. ΡHΓINOΣ Laureate head of Apollo to right; behind, olive sprig. Herzfelder - (D-/R56). HCG 1, 1637. HN Italy 2494. Beautifully toned and with a bold and expressive obverse struck in high relief. The reverse a bit weak and with some marks, otherwise, very fine.

From a Swiss collection, formed before 2005.

The high Classical tetradrachms from Rhegion are among the most impressive coins struck in the Magna Graecia: they combine the finest Greek style with an exceptionally high relief on the city's coat of arms, the facing head of a lion.
