Description

★ A nicely toned tetradrachm from Syracuse ★

SICILY. Syracuse. Deinomenid Tyranny, 485-466 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 24 mm, 17.00 g, 4 h), circa 480-475. Charioteer driving quadriga walking to right, holding goad in his right hand and reins in his left; above, Nike flying right to crown the horses. Rev. ΣYRΑΚΟ-ΣΙ-Ο-Ν Diademed head of Arethusa to right, her hair drawn up at the back and wearing ribbon and pearl necklace; around, four dolphins swimming right. Boehringer 128 (V58/R88). Nicely toned. Die break and light scratch on the reverse, otherwise, good very fine.
