Description

Mooney, Glenn A. ARTICLE MANSUCRIPTS, TYPEWRITTEN DRAFTS, ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPHS AND ASSOCIATED CORRESPONDENCE. Files include: 1) Original correspondence dated 1976 from John J. Ford, Jr. (two typewritten notes, signed in ink) and Dr. Joseph B. Vacca (one two-page handwritten letter, signed), along with Mooney’s side of the correspondence in photocopy or carbon-copy, all on the Washington before Boston medal and its die varieties and various strikings (the Vacca material includes a few original photographs and negatives); 2) a file devoted to Mooney’s “The Medal the Mint Forgot,” a talk presented to the Western Pennsylvania Numismatic Society in 1982 about an apparent muling in the U.S. Indian Peace Medal series, and present here in the original typescript, with original photographs, clippings and associated correspondence, as well as in a copy made for John W. Adams, along with relevant photocopies and handwritten transcriptions relating to Mooney’s research in this area; 3) a file dedicated to Mooney’s article, “A Serious Look at Play Money,” published in the March 1969 issue of The Numismatist and derived from a talk on the subject given the previous year to the Western Pennsylvania Numismatic Society, with drafts, correspondence with Melvin Fuld, Russ Rulau and Ed Rochette, handwritten memoranda, and nearly 50 original photographs; 4) two drafts, one of them annotated, of Mooney’s article on “The Chemistry and Mechanics of Coin Housing,” along with a copy of a typescript by A.E. Burg on Matthew Boulton. Materials generally near fine. A significant gathering. Mooney gave a talk on the Washington before Boston medal to the Western Pennsylvania Numismatic Society in February of 1976, a duplicated typescript of which was circulated on a limited basis afterwards. Though not the final word, Mooney brought together much useful information in this work, providing a historical overview of the medal and detailed analysis of the dies used in the various strikings and restrikings. Present here is correspondence entered into later that year with John J. Ford, Jr., and Dr. Joseph B. Vacca, both of whom assisted Mooney in further developing his work. His other work included here includes his substantial article on play money (with correspondence and original photos). Ex Wayne Homren Library.
