A scarce work by the founder of the Moscow Numismatic Society and longtime curator of the Moscow State Historical Museum, cataloguing the ancient Greek coins in the collection of the Imperial Moscow University. In the course of his distinguished career Oreshnikov published some 120 books and articles. He remains best known for his 1896 classic study of early Russian coins, Русскiе монеты до 1547 года.
