Bound with a Tetradrachm of Alexander
Imhoof-Blumer, F. CHOIX DE MONNAIES GRECQUES DE LA COLLECTION DE F. IMHOOF-BLUMER. Deuxième édition. Paris and Leipzig: Rollin et Feuardent and Koehler’s Antiquarium, 1883. Folio [37 by 28 cm], later full brown morocco; front cover lettered and decorated in gilt; raised circular portion decorated in gilt and embossed with an eight-pointed star within which an original tetradrachm of Alexander is housed within a die-cut hole, with both sides of the coin visible; decorative endpapers. (6) pages; 9 finely engraved plates by L. Dardel. Binding extremities rubbed; very good or better. A remarkably bound copy of this very scarce work, which functions as a supplement to the author’s 1883 Monnaies grecques. Bound by Dionysis Valassis, with his stamp on the cover. Percy Gardner summarized Imhoof-Blumer in the obituary he wrote for him in the 1920 volume of the Numismatic Chronicle: “Mr. J.P. Six of Amsterdam surpassed him in brilliance of conjecture, and Mr. Head in breadth of view: but neither could rival him in extent and accuracy of knowledge. ... I do not suppose that anyone hereafter will carry the whole of Greek coinage in his head as Imhoof did” (page 96). Daehn 2062 (incorrectly calling for photographic plates).
