Description

Combe’s 1782 Hunterian Catalogue

[Hunter]. Combe, Carolus. NUMMORUM VETERUM POPULORUM ET URBIUM, QUI IN MUSEO GULIELMI HUNTER ASSERVANTUR, DESCRIPTIO FIGURIS ILLUSTRATA. Londini: Ex Officina J. Nichols, 1782. 4to [29.5 by 23 cm], somewhat later brown half calf; ruled spine with dark brown label, gilt; all page edges red. xi, (1), 354, (2) pages; 68 well-engraved plates, mostly depicting ancient Greek coins [a few depicting monograms]. Most plate versos with penciled annotations identifying coins. Binding lightly worn at extremities; near fine. A well-preserved example of this landmark 18th-century catalogue. Charles Combe (1743–1817) actively participated in the formation of the extensive coin collection formed by William Hunter (1718–1783), now housed at the University of Glasgow. Unfortunately, only this first volume of a proposed complete catalogue ever reached publication. Subsequently, it was brought up to date by George Macdonald beginning in 1899 (see next). Babelon 124. Dekesel C306. Lipsius 87 & 195.
