Magnificent Enlarged Plates of Greek Coins
Hill, George F. SELECT GREEK COINS: A SERIES OF ENLARGEMENTS, ILLUSTRATED AND DESCRIBED. First edition. Paris and Brussels: G. Vanoest, 1927. Folio [34 by 26.5 cm], later red-tan full morocco; spine with four raised bands; front and spine lettered in brown; red endpapers. 61, (3) pages; 64 fine plates. Institutional library stamps on several pages and plates. Near fine. A major work, being a superb series of enlarged illustrations of artistic Greek coins. The oversized format has resulted in most surviving copies having various binding problems. Clain-Stefanelli 3557. Daehn 1168: “Reviews the artistic elements of Greek coins. Over 250 of the finest Greek coins are described and shown in enlarged photographs. The coins are arranged according to subject: male heads, female heads, single figures, figures grouped with animals, chariot-groups, animals, monstrous beings, plants, and inanimate objects. The plates in the original edition were printed by Léon Marotte of Paris from photographs by Donald Macbeth of London. Most of the coins are from the British Museum, although some are from the Gulbenkian, Jameson, Lloyd, and Woodward collections.”
