Description

Akerman’s Numismatic Publications

Akerman, John Yonge. A NUMISMATIC MANUAL; OR, GUIDE TO THE STUDY OF GREEK, ROMAN, AND ENGLISH COINS. London: Effingham Wilson, 1832. 16mo, later full tan morocco; spine with two raised bands, lettered in brown; brown endpapers. xii, 182 pages; 7 engraved plates of coins, mounted on card stock and bound in on hinges. Slight rubbing to spine, else fine. [with] Akerman, John Yonge. A NUMISMATIC MANUAL. London: Taylor & Walton, 1840. 8vo, later maroon leather; spine lettered in gilt. xiv, (2), 420, 8 pages; text illustrations; 17 lithographic and engraved plates. Ex Royal Numismatic Society Library. Near fine. [with] Akerman, John Yonge. ANCIENT COINS OF CITIES AND PRINCES, GEOGRAPHICALLY ARRANGED AND DESCRIBED. HISPANIA-GALLIA-BRITANNIA. London, 1846. 8vo, original blue cloth, gilt. iv, (2), 203 (1) pages; 24 engraved plates. Plates foxed, else fine. The 1832 edition of the Manual “was Akerman’s first numismatic book and for the next forty years he was a tireless promoter of British numismatics” (Manville 295). The 1840 edition was greatly expanded. The third work was intended to be only the first volume in what the author saw as a series on ancient coins arranged according to Pellerin and Eckhel. It was, unfortunately, the only volume published.
