Extensive Reference on Classical Sites
Stilwell, Richard, et al. [editors]. THE PRINCETON ENCYCLOPEDIA OF CLASSICAL SITES. First edition. Princeton: Princeton University Press, 1976. 4to, original tan cloth; jacket. 1019, (3) pages. Jacket worn; very good or better. An important reference. From the Preface: “Our aim in preparing this book has been to provide a one-volume source of information on sites that show remains from the Classical period. In delimiting the period, the mid eighth century B.C. was chosen as the upper terminus. This includes the period marking the expansion of Classical culture to the west, with the Hellenic colonization of Sicily and South Italy, and to the eastern shore of the Aegean. The lower terminus was more difficult to determine. In general the beginning of the sixth century of the Christian era seemed a suitable limit. Early Christian sites of the fourth and fifth centuries, while in many ways dependent on Classical antecedents, have not been included.”
