Description

King, John Glen. NUMMI FAMILIARUM ET IMPERATORUM ROMANORUM. London, 1787. Folio [33.5 by 24 cm], contemporary brown calf decoratively paneled in gilt; spine with six raised bands, attractively decorated in gilt; black morocco spine label, gilt; marbled endpapers; silk marker. 26 + 101 engraved plates in ochre depicting Roman coins (lacks second Plate 18). 127 plates in all. No title or descriptive text issued. Extremities a bit worn; both covers detached, but present; internally near fine. Not in Lipsius or virtually any other numismatic bibliography before Dekesel. Medallist to Catherine the Great, King apparently prepared these unusual plates to accompany an intended history of Roman consular and imperial coins. Privately published and rare: Dekesel located seven copies. The number of plates would appear to vary: this volume shows no sign of ever having the missing plate. Dekesel K89. Ex Kolbe Sale 45, lot 260.
