Description

Stack's Galleries. THE SOBERNHEIM COLLECTION OF ANCIENT GLASS INCLUDING EGYPTIAN, ROMAN, ISLAMIC, RHENISH, SYRIAN, SIDONIAN AND OTHERS. GREEK AND ROMAN COINS. SOLD BY ORDER OF MRS. CLARA SOBERNHEIM, PORT CHESTER, N.Y. PUBLIC AUCTION SALE. New York: Catalogue No. 14, Conducted by Joseph B. Stack and T.J. Muldoon, April 19, 1952. 8vo, original printed card covers with overlapping fore-edges. 43, (5) pages; 447 lots; 16 halftone plates. Covers spotted; near fine. Quite rare. This catalogue was virtually unknown until the systematic researches of Martin Gengerke uncovered a copy in the American Numismatic Society Library. Stack's Galleries was a subsidiary of the main firm and was intended to handle antiquities and related material. This seems to be the only one of its catalogues to include coins. The last five pages of text comprise 66 lots of coins (lots 382–447 inclusive), about equally divided among Greek and Roman coins, and the last three plates (XIV–XVI) depict both sides of 19 Greek and 11 Roman coins. The remainder of the catalogue and illustrations are devoted to describing and depicting an outstanding collection of ancient and Islamic glass. Reprinted on the title verso is a letter from Arthur Upham Pope of the Asia Institute (where the collection was on loan), which describes the collection as "probably the best systematically collected glass that has ever been made." One of only several examples we have ever handled. Ex Cardinal Collection Library.
