Description

Bushnell, Charles I. THE NARRATIVE OF JOHN BLATCHFORD, DETAILING HIS SUFFERINGS IN THE REVOLUTIONARY WAR, WHILE A PRISONER OF THE BRITISH. AS RELATED BY HIMSELF. WITH AN INTRODUCTION AND NOTES, BY CHARLES I. BUSHNELL. New York: Privately Printed, 1865. 8vo, later marbled paper covers. Lithographic frontispiece portrait on tinted background; title printed in red and black; 127, (1) pages; additional lithographic plate depicting the Jersey prison ship, printed on a tinted background. Unopened and generally fine. One of several first-person accounts of the Revolutionary War published in annotated editions by numismatist Charles Bushnell. Most of these narratives were of Americans taken prisoner by the British, and describe in detail the hardships endured by them in captivity. Bushnell conducted real research in this area, and his editions, printed in very small numbers, are often as interesting for his annotations as they are for the original autobiographical accounts themselves. In this case, Blatchford's narrative ends on page 46, and Bushnell's extensive notes occupy pages 47-127. The Narrative of John Blatchford is one of the Bushnell monographs included in his famous compendium Crumbs for Antiquarians. Howes B524.
