Description

Rare Work on Armenian Coins

Corsini, Eduard. DE MINNISARI ALIORUMQUE ARMENIAE REGUM NUMMIS ET ARSACIDARUM EPOCHA DISSERTATIO. Liburni: Typis Antonii Santini & Sociorum, 1754. First edition. 4to [24 by 18 cm], contemporary tan calf-backed marbled boards; spine with four raised bands, ruled and lettered in gilt; silk marker; marbled endpapers. viii, 72 pages; title printed in red and black with a delightful coin engraving at the base; woodcut decorations. Spine a bit worn, but sound and still attractive; page edges spotted. Very good or better. Rare. An early work on Armenian coins by Corsini, a scholar at the Scuole Pie, founded at Rome early in the 17th century. A controversial work, it was attacked the same year by Eckhel’s teacher, the Jesuit Erasmus Froelich, and a reply by Corsini was published in 1757. Brunet 29768. Dekesel C336. Hirsch 28. Lipsius 90 (incorrectly listing the first edition as 1744). Ex Kolbe Sale 94, lot 1012.
