Description

The Carles-Tolrá Collection of Spanish Coins

Carles-Tolrá, Emilio [collector]. CATÁLOGO DE LA COLECCIÓN NUMISMÁTICA EMILIO CARLES-TOLRÁ. Barcelona: Antigua Libreria Babra, 1936. Two volumes. Small folio [31 by 23.5 cm], later maroon pebbled cloth, gilt. (6), 344, (4) pages; 132 very fine plates. Near fine. A scarce catalogue of a very important collection of Spanish coins, including Celtic issues, Visigothic pieces and the coins of the Islamic period as well as the later coinage. A massive work, it was catalogued by Antonio Lopez y Lopez-Revillas. Especially important for Spanish gold, it covers the entirety of Spanish issues and is of unquestioned significance in this field. Provides much information on individual issues, including data on alloy, diameter and weight. The plates are also of exceptional quality. One of only 500 copies printed. Clain-Stefanelli 11331*: “A basic reference catalog for Spanish gold coins.” Grierson 170 (“Contient les meilleures planchets de monnaies espagnoles qui existent, mais ne comprend que les séries celtibères et, pour les époques postérieures, les monnaies d’or.”).
