Description

Russia 25 Roubles 1876 Contemporary Forgery

P# A45, N# 225022; # A/A 213955; With handwritten "Forghery" in russian on face; VG The inscription on the reverse side refers to a criminal case being instituted by the Prosecutor General, for forgery of currency, a criminal case opened on the name of a Jewish merchant from Romania, where the banknote was found. The handwritten text on the back of the banknote is in Romanian: “NI. (Nota Importanta) gasită la Mendel Iancu Sin Iosub Vedută de noi Procuror General + semnatura, Procuror + semnatura” “NI. (Important Note) found at Mendel Iancu Sin Iosub Seen by us General Prosecutor + signature, Prosecutor + signature” These fake banknotes reached the territory of Romania, due to the presence of Russian military troops, together with the military conflict between Russia and Turkey from 1877-1878. This fake banknote is an exceptional one also because it is one of the first forgeries discovered on the territory of Romania, in banknotes. It should be noted that the National Bank of Romania was founded in 1880, and the issuance and circulation of Romanian banknotes began in 1881. In this context, the population was still not used to paper money, banknotes, did not trust them, and forgers and placers of the fake money took advantage of the poor information of the population. The Russian military troops on their way to Bulgaria, where the military conflicts with the Ottoman Empire took place, brought such fake banknotes, using them for the purchases they made on the territory of Romania, directly from the citizens, the people not being familiar with these forms of payment, so they could be easily deceived. Such banknotes discovered by the state authorities, confirmed by the signatures of the prosecutors, are no longer known in collections, due to the fact that once discovered, this banknote was part of a criminal case and would not have to appear publicly, as it had to be destroyed . A unique, exceptional piece, in an extraordinarily good condition, which presents a social and military historical context, used during the 1877-1878 war and discovered outside the territory of Russia, by the Romanian judicial authorities.; F with 3 pinholes
