The exact purpose behind the minting of these coins, typical of the Potosi mint and minted in silver in several denominations from the late reign of Philip IV to that of Ferdinand VI, remains uncertain. Some suggest they were an invention of silver merchants who coined their metals at the mint, subsequently profiting from their sale. Others believe they are related to the devotion to the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, possibly serving as a protective amulet or simply as a display of wealth, hence their hole. However, both theories can coexist without contradiction. Specific documentation detailing their unique production process is lacking, save for a reference found by Glenn Murray, indicating that the registration of these coins is recorded within the weight per mark of the galanos. In any case, these coins represent a distinctive chapter in the monetary history of Potosi. Fashionable among the society of the time, they were produced in all the standard modules of silver pieces, from the half real to the real de a ocho, consistently adhering to official metrology. From the reign of Philip V, we have specific pieces of all denominations, and this one from 1716 is related to the end of the Spanish War of Succession and the reopening of the shipping routes between Spain and America, which will put an end to many precarious situations. For instance, in 1716, there were four consecutive Viceroys of Peru and the Casa de la Contratación ‘House of Trade of the Indies’ was relocated from Seville to Cádiz in 1717 to promote and control the increasingly active trade with the Indies. / No sabemos a ciencia cierta el motivo de la realización de estas piezas, propias de la ceca de Potosí, que se fabricaron en plata en distintos valores desde finales del reinado de Felipe IV hasta el de Fernando VI. Unos dicen que fue un invento de los mercaderes de plata que acuñaban sus metales en esa ceca y que luego las vendían en su propio beneficio, otros creen que están relacionados con la devoción al Sagrado Corazón de Jesús y con su uso como profiláctico o también de simple ostentación, por eso su agujero, pero en realidad ambas teorías pueden unirse sin ningún problema. No hay documentación específica que nos informe sobre su realización diferenciada del resto de las piezas, salvo la referencia documental encontrada por Glenn Murray que nos dice que el registro de estas monedas está incluido en el peso en marco de los galanos. En cualquier caso, son preciosas monedas que marcan una etapa concreta de la historia monetaria de Potosí que se pusieron de moda entre la sociedad de la época y por ello se fabricaron en todos los módulos de las piezas de plata, desde el medio real al real de a ocho, respetando siempre la metrología oficial. Del reinado de Felipe V tenemos ejemplares concretos de todos los valores y esta de 1716 se relaciona con el final de la Guerra de Sucesión y la reapertura de las rutas de navegación entre España y América, que va a poner fin a muchas situaciones precarias. Por ejemplo, en 1716 llegó a haber cuatro personas que de forma consecutiva ejercieron el cargo de Virrey de Perú, además se va a trasladar la Casa de la Contratación de Sevilla a Cádiz (1717) para fomentar y controlar el cada vez más activo comercio con las Indias.
