Stater, gold, posthumous, Amphipolis , about 323-315 BC. or later. AV 8.56 g. Laureate head r. with sideburns. Rev. FILIPPOU Fast biga r., charioteer is holding reins with his l. hand, kentron in his r. hand; in outer l. field A, below horses, trident and letter or monogram. Le Rider, Ph. cf. 230,267 (obv. very close, rev. without A and with monogram P/o).
Of the highest rarity, possibly u nique and of great historical interest . Good very fine This enigmatic stater has some details in common with Le Rider 267, not mentioned by him when discussing his group IIIC, cf. p. 427 (attribution to the mint of Amphipolis with some reservations). The head on the obverse is in its iconography and style very different from the usual heads of Apollo: the sideburns and the features show individual characteristics. It is for the moment not possible to identify the head with a sovereign of the 3rd c. BC. The numismatic world is waiting for a specimen with legible monogram or symbol.
