ACARNANIA. Federal Confederacy. Ca. 250-200 BC. AR drachm (19mm, 12h). NGC Choice Fine. Leucas mint, Lycourgus, magistrate. Head of river god Achelous as a horned man-faced bull right; ΛΥΚΟΥΡΓΟΣ behind / AKAPNANΩN, Apollo seated left, bow outward in right hand, leaning on left arm; AP monogram in left field. SNG Copenhagen 419. Achelous was the Greek patron deity of the largest river in Greece. Like other river deities, he is usually depicted as a man-faced bull, with a particularly sensitive rendering on this tetradrachm of the Acarnanian Confederacy, a multi-city league on the southern Illyrian coast. While usually seen as benevolent, Achelous battled Heracles for the favors of the beautiful nymph Deianeira and lost one of his horns in the match; he had to trade one of the horns of the Amalthean Goat to get it back.
