Description

SICILY. Syracuse. Ca. 415-405 BC. AR tetradrachm (26mm, 17.16 gm, 12h), NGC XF 4/5 - 3/5, marks. Reverse die (which is the obverse position in the holder) signed by Phrygillos, c. 415-405. Charioteer driving galloping chariot left, kentron in right hand, reins in left; Nike flying right above to crown the driver, grain ear left in exergue / ΣVPAKOΣION, head of Arethusa left, hair in saccos, wearing an ampyx inscribed with ΦYP (sic), four dolphins swimming around. Rizzo, pl. XLIII, 13. SNG ANS 278. Tudeer 53. A curious example with the die engravers signature spelled incorrectly. On each clear die that this cataloger could find, the signature correctly reads ΦPY. This example is incorrectly engraved ΦYP. Ex Nomos Obolos 2 (14 June 2015), lot 37.
