Description

BRUTTIUM. Caulonia. Late 6th century BC. AR stater or nomos (29mm, 7.96 gm, 12h). NGC VF 5/5 - 3/5, graffito. KAVΛ, full-length figure of nude Apollo advancing right, olive branch in left hand, small winged figure (daemon) atop extended right arm, running right and holding branch in each hand; stag standing right, head reverted, in right field, guilloche border / Incuse of obverse, reversed and without ethnic; reeded border. Noe 23-25. HN Italy 2035. SNG ANS 151. Struck on a large flan with deep gunmetal toning. An incomparable example of archaic Greek art, displaying the remarkable technical perfection achieved by the southern Italian coin masters working in the relief-incuse fabric.
