George III "Northumberland" Shilling 1763 AU Details (Stained) NGC, KM597, S-3742. A popular and rare shilling date, purportedly only around 2,000 struck in accordance with order of the Earl of Northumberland that £100 worth of the denomination be minted for distribution upon his appointment as Lord Lieutenant. The surfaces appear a cross between smoky lilac and ivory, providing a singular countenance, a few flan bubbles noted on the reverse, but hardly distracting on the whole. Sold with old Seaby envelope. From the Morris Collection
