Description

MACEDONIAN KINGDOM. Alexander III the Great (336-323 BC). AV stater (18mm, 8.50 gm, 6h). NGC XF 4/5 - 4/5. Early posthumous issue of Uncertain eastern mint, ca. 324/3-300 BC. Head of Athena right, hair in three parallel corkscrew curls, wearing triple-crested Corinthian helmet pushed back on head, the bowl decorated with a griffin / AΛEΞANΔPOY / BA-ΣIΛEΩΣ, Nike standing left, wreath upward in right hand, stylis cradled on left arm; ΠΔ monogram in left field under wing. Price 3994 var. (ΠΕ monogram and opposite legend orientation). Extremely rare - only three examples in sales archives including this coin, with the other two having the legend orientation of the standard issue in Price.
