China Hongkong & Shanghai Banking Corporation, Chefoo 10 Dollars 1.9.1922 Pick S317a S/M#Y13 PMG Choice About Unc 58. The rare Chefoo design is featured, enhanced by the 555 serial number. Though Chefoo (now Yantai) was a relatively small city, it was right next to the British Leased Territory of Weihai, which was the main British trading port in northern China. As a result, the city attracted large amounts of British capital, and to serve the new business interests, the HSBC set up an office there. The capital flows were so large that a special series with new designs were created, as seen here. This is the largest denomination of the 1922 series, which was the only one issued. The light multicolor underprint and manuscript signature remains excellent on this example which has seen only the lightest service in commerce.
