Description

THRACIAN KINGDOM. Lysimachus (305-281 BC). AR drachm (17mm, 12h). NGC AU. Colophon, 297/6 BC. Head of Heracles right, wearing lion skin headdress, paws tied before neck / ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ-ΛΥΣΙΜΑΧΟΥ, Zeus seated left on backless throne, right leg drawn back, feet on stool, eagle in right hand, scepter in left; forepart of lion left above crescent right in left field, pentagram below throne. Price L28 var. (legend arrangement). and Thompson 127 var. (legend arrangement). Apparently unpublished variety. Both Thompson 127 and Price L28 exhibit the traditional placement of name and title. Evidently, this was a short-lived transitional issue. The few examples that exist seem to be struck from the same reverse die in different stages of life with die breaks becoming progressively worse.
