Republic gold, enamel & diamond "Lucanas to President Augusto Leguia" Presentation Medal ND UNC, 72x62mm. 113.56gm. Approximately 1.15ct. weight. By A.B. Madueño. AL PRESIDENTE DE LA REPÚBLICA / SEÑOR AUGUSTO B. LEGUIA, enameled and diamond-inset arms of Peru, stamped with maker's name below // HOMENAJE DE GRATITUD / DE LA PROVINCIA DE LUCANAS, Mountainscape with Ccarhuarazo volcano and early truck, centering a diamond. An unfathomable specimen and one this cataloger never considered to exist, the Medal on offer is a clear outlier and certain one of the most interesting pieces in this very auction. Featuring the expertly enameled and diamond-inset arms of Peru to the obverse, and a curious rendering of the volcano Ccarhuarazo, one can only fathom what the intent of this piece is, as it eludes all major references and academic papers we've been able to get our hands on. One likely hypothesis based on the imagery of the reverse is that this was presented from the province of Lucanas to Leguia at the completion of a provincial roadway, an area of focus during Leguia's second term or "Oncenio." Leguia enacted the "Ley de Conscripción Vial" or "Road Conscription Law" in an effort to modernize and unify Peru. Regardless of the origin, the specimen remains an impressive relic from the tumultuous early 20th century in Peru and is assuredly a trophy of the Monedero Collection.
