Victoria gold Proof 1/2 Sovereign 1897-M PR63 Deep Cameo PCGS, Melbourne mint, KM12, S-3875, Marsh-Unl. An absolute stunner that will stop any serious collector of the Sovereign series in their tracks. Proof 1/2 Sovereigns of any branch mint are difficult to come by, but especially so from Australia at the end of Victoria's prolific reign. While unlisted in Marsh, Proofs of 1896 and 1898 are listed, with mintages of just 4 pieces, with the current representative likely in that range, as purported by the Coinworks listing of their ex. Murdoch specimen. Absolute rarity aside, the current offering displays an admirable preservation, fully Choice and dressed in ample reflectivity as to warrant PCGS's "Deep Cameo" superlative. With a fully frosted veiled portrait and reverse St. George, the superior eye appeal for such a diminutive piece is undeniable, and will surely carry it to an especially discerning cabinet. Ex.
