Description

George III Proof Bank Dollar of 5 Shillings 1804 PR63 NGC, Soho mint, KM-Tn1, S-3768, ESC-1926 (prev. 145). These Bank of England Dollars were a coinage of necessity, overstruck on Spanish 8 Reales in an attempt to solve the drastic shortage of silver coinage in Britain. Proofs were both struck over 8 Reales as intended, but also struck on specially prepared new flans; from its lack of evidence of an undertype, this offering would appear to be the latter case. Accordingly, the viewer is treated to an entirely unadulterated impression of the strike, only minor die breaks and hairlines in the glossy reflective fields. George's elaborate Soho portrait is almost immaculate, and certainly befitting of a higher certified grade. Handsomely toned, magenta-gray splashes adding clouds to the clear sky of the mirror fields, a supremely attractive specimen of the type and rare as a proof.
