Description

William IV Proof Shilling 1831 PR64 NGC, KM713, S-3835. Plain edge. A superb example of this Proof-only issue, immaculately preserved and handsomely toned. The reverse has cultured a blazing red gold patina atop the reflective fields, transforming into vibrant cobalt and magenta at the peripheries, enhancing its visual effect tenfold. It is likely this intense toning which has held this coin back from a 'cameo' level designation, as although William's portrait shows the required matte frost, the fields surrounding have darkened over time to reduce the contrast. Nonetheless, a true beauty of a coin and worthy of particular collector attention. From the Lake County Collection
