Victoria silver Proof "Gothic" Crown 1847 PR61 PCGS, cf. KM744 (for full weight), cf. S-3883 (same), cf. ESC-2578a (same; R2). Plain edge. N over inverted N in UNITA variety. Struck in pure silver and confirmed by XRF analysis. 39mm. 25.6gm. A most curious and exciting emission, struck nearly 2 grams underweight, yet showcasing all the telltale signs of authenticity and age one comes to expect from the iconic "Gothic" Crowns of Victoria. While much is left to speculation as to the reason for such an oversight, one other similar example was offered with great success three years ago by Sovereign Rarities, with a comparable weight and each of the same subvariety. Upon closer inspection of both off-weight specimens, both feature a later reverse die state, punctuated by die cracks through the legends. One could suppose that, similar to the Una and the Lion 5 Pounds, due to the contemporary popularity of the series, additional examples were later struck to order for a VIP client not long after 1847. Regardless of how this enigma came to be, its importance within this instantly recognizable series is undeniable, and certainly warrants further consideration and study by the specialist.
