Joseph II gold 2 Souverain d'Or 1786-A AU58 NGC, Vienna mint, KM33, Fr-442 (under Austria). Krause and Friedberg refer to this type as a 1 Souverain d'Or, while NGC refers to it as a 2 Souverain d'Or, a confusion spurred by a shift in valuation in 1786, the year of this example's issue. On rare occasions, as is the case here, this type was struck without a corresponding mintmark. Viennese issues are considered more common than emissions from Brussels, Milan, and Hall, but they are still quite limited on the open market, especially without a mintmark. Golden honey toning and scant evidence of handling propel this piece to the cusp of Mint State. HID09801242017 © 2024 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved
