Description

Victoria gold 1/2 Sovereign 1861/0-SYDNEY XF45 NGC, Sydney mint, cf. KM3 (overdate unlisted), Fr-10a, Marsh-386A (R3). From an original low mintage of 183,500, an unknown number of coins were minted with the 1/0 overdate, which in this example, is well observable under magnification. A brief study in comparable sales reveals a limited few of these overdates appearing on the marketplace. Beyond this issue, which we handled in January of 2023, the previous one we sold was a PCGS VF25 in January 2014, selling for $2,820. This specimen is conditionally vastly superior, and in fact, is the finest-graded in the NGC census with only one piece sharing the same technical grade in the PCGS population. An offering that admits honest wear from active circulation and projects the typical greenish tinge due to the naturally occurring silver in the alloy used in Australia. Incidentally, this is the primary reason why these pieces are so rare, as they got melted down for their higher than face value metal content. Ex.
