Mughal Empire. Jahangir (AH 1014-1037 / AD 1605-1627) gold Heavy (Sawai) Mohur AH 1019 Year 5 (1609) MS62 NGC, Agra mint, KM185.1. Fr-755. 13.56gm. Khusru couplet. An absolute show-stopper and instantly recognizable as an important Mughal offering, with few that can claim to match the level of aesthetic quality seen here. While we handle the standard weight Mohurs of Jahangir with relative frequency, even at higher states of preservation, rarely do we find ourselves with the opportunity to handle these heavy Sawai issues, the only of this date at NGC, weighing nearly three grams more and struck with care and precision. Imbued with matte-like recesses that project the carefully engraved devices towards the viewer when illuminated, showcasing every minute detail amidst the generous mint glow. Struck solely for presentation for high officials at court or foreign dignitaries, it is clear that great attention was paid in the production of these issues that can only be fully appreciated by the discerning collector of this increasingly difficult series. The sole certified specimen and rare as such. HID09801242017 © 2024 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved
