Victoria Complete Maundy Set Collection 1838-1901 PCGS, KM-MDS86-MDS157. (7) MS67 (61) MS66 (98) MS65 (53) MS64 (12) MS63 (11) MS62 (2) MS61 (2) MS60 (5) AU58 (2) AU55 (1) AU53 (1) AU50 (1) VF35. An incredible complete offering of Queen Victoria's Maundy Sets produced during her reign from 1838-1901. This is one of just five presumed sets issued in 1902 upon the coronation of Edward VII to commemorate the legacy of the late Queen; whether or not the sets were compiled from existing Maundy coins or whether the sets were re-struck by the Royal Mint for this occasion remains to be seen, although the lower states of preservation seen here seem to suggest the former. Nonetheless, the items in this collection display cohesive polychromatic toning, offering a balance of individual personality and sense of connectedness between the parts. The grades herein span from VF35 to MS67 with most falling in the MS64-MS66 range, a laudable average grade for such a painstaking compilation of specimens. The set is accompanied by a custom presentation case produced by Sheppard Bros, Jewellers & Silversmiths, which held a storefront at 23 Dibeth, Walsall, offering ladies' and gentlemen's wear and accoutrement during its operation. All in all, a spectacular lot that has serious numismatic weight, particularly for Anglophiles. HID09801242017 © 2024 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved
