Hamburg. Free City gold "Peace of the New Century" Portugalöser of 10 Ducats 1801-Dated MS61 Prooflike NGC, Gaed-1984. 44mm. 34.74gm. By A. Abramson. Struck to the weight of a Portugaloser 10 Ducat. DEM VATERLANDE HEIL Hammonia emptying an offering bowl on the altar of the Fatherland; in exergue HAMBURG // FRIEDEN DEM IAHRHUNDERTE Winged Genius holding olive branch in right hand; in exergue 1801. An expansive medal struck in commemoration of the new century, with either facet showing a votive act ensuring peace and prosperity for Hamburg. Rarely is this design found in the 10 Ducat weight, more often located in the 1/2 Bankportugaloser weight. Here, the surfaces evince a strong orpiment tone, contributing to a charisma already established by a pleasing distinction between frosted devices and mirrored expanses. Displaying stray marks so often found on these large-format gold pieces, but maintaining its original appeal in both rarity and aesthetic.
