Bavaria. Ludwig I gold "Maximilian Joseph Monument" Taler 1835-Dated (1903) MS63 NGC, Munich mint, cf. KM780.2 (for silver issue), cf. Dav-577 (same). 48.43gm. Scepter not beyond shoulder variety. 1903 on edge. An incredible Specimen, a relic of two major numismatic collections, carrying the weight of history and beauty on its shoulders. Commissioned by Count Ferrari in 1903, this gold piece was struck at the Munich mint from the original dies designed to commemorate this local Maximilian Joseph monument on the 10th anniversary of his death. The coin is presumed unique, as is the case for many of Ferrari's private commissions. Having seen this design in silver several times, it is most pleasing to view it in a gold format. The motifs take on a dramatic regal character as do the scintillating expanses, which gleam with poignant luster in hand. Some soft chatter in the fields confirms the grade, wholly admissible given the rarity and numismatic significance of the item. Ex.
