Louis XV gold Proof Pattern Ecu 1740-A PR62 NGC, Paris mint, KM-Pn15, Dav-1331, Gad-322 (R5), Ciani-2124, Dup-Unl. 49.15gm. By Joseph Charles Roettier, signed on truncation. Bust of Louis XV left / Crowned arms in wreath with date and mintmark. An incredibly rare and exceptional issue, with estimates suggesting that only five to ten examples remain in existence. Its composition is distinctly medallic, featuring a pronounced wide rim that elevates significantly above the fields, which immediately imparts a sense of superior quality and deliberate craftsmanship. The central regions of the piece are enveloped in a watery luster, accentuating a high-relief and crisply-detailed portrait of the King. The King's hair flows with intricate curls as his facial features are rendered with a remarkable degree of definition, capturing his dignified expression in stunning clarity. On the reverse, the craftsmanship continues to excel, boasting sharp legends above golden expanses. Across both fields, fine wisps that define the near-Choice grade are visible, yet they do not do much to detract from the overall magnificence of the piece at hand. To further its elite status and rarity, there are only three examples to be graded by NGC, with this extraordinary offering residing in the second-highest designation. To witness this exemplar is to understand why it embodies the zenith of numismatic mastery and artisanship, undoubtedly destined for quite the sophisticated cabinet and collector. Ex.
