Description

THRACIAN KINGDOM. Lysimachus (305-281 BC). AR tetradrachm (32mm, 16.79 gm, 11h). NGC AU 5/5 - 3/5, Fine Style. Lampsacus, ca. 297-281 BC. Diademed head of deified Alexander III right, with horn of Ammon / ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ | ΛΥΣΙΜΑΧΟΥ, Athena enthroned left, Nike in right hand, resting left arm on shield, spear beyond; herm left in outer left field, ΠYTΩ monogram in inner left field. Thompson 58. Müller 90. HGC 3, 1750b. An interesting tetradrachm with graffito scratched into the die surfaces before the design was cut. The result is a series of raised circular lines that look like scratches until you look carefully under magnification. This is a phenomenon that this cataloger has never seen before.
