Republic gold 1/2 Pond 1897 MS62 NGC, Pretoria mint, KM9.2, Hern-Z43. A well-known rarity of the South African series, highly lustrous with only light contact marks and a generally strong strike (besides the usual weakness on the reverse eagle). We have only handled a few examples of this rare type in the past; the last MS62 graded example of this type sold as part of our April 2013 Chicago sale where it realized $6,000 hammer. Accordingly we expect collectors of South African coinage to show keen interest in this rare Mint State offering.
