"Treaty of Fontainbleau" silver Medal 1785-Dated MS62 NGC, Julius-2482. 45mm. By J. Everts. Not often appearing at auction but consistently bringing strong premiums. Exhibiting poignant pondlike qualities and an allover cabinet tone. The Treaty of Fontainebleau was signed in 1785 between the Dutch Republic and the Kingdom of Prussia. This treaty was a consequence of the Prussian intervention in the Dutch Republic during a period of political turmoil, often referred to as the Patriot Revolution. Under the treaty, Prussia guaranteed the security of the Stadtholder, William V of Orange, against the Patriots (who were pushing for democratic reforms), and in return, the Dutch Republic agreed to close the Scheldt River to maritime traffic, which benefitted Antwerp's trade at the expense of Dutch ports. This treaty played a significant role in the geopolitical landscape of Europe at the time, reflecting the complex interplay of power, trade, and political influence.
