BABYLONIA. Alexandrine Empire. Stamenes-Seleucus (ca. 328-311 BC). AV daric (16mm, 8.24 gm). NGC Choice VF 4/5 - 3/5, marks. Babylon, imitating Achaemenid Empire. Persian king or hero, wearing cidaris and candys, quiver over left shoulder, in kneeling-running stance right, drapery in long curve from left knee to right ankle, right knee obscured by drapery, transverse spear in right hand, bow forward in left; no control marks / Geometric-patterned punch of wavy lines and pellets in incuse rectangle. Nicolet-Pierre - (only double-darics listed). Cf. Sunrise 160 (monogram in left field on obverse). BMC Arabia pl. xxv, 24. Cf. Classical Numismatic Group, Auction 53 (15 March 2000), lot 680 (same dies). Exceptionally rare with only a handful of single daric issues of all types combined in sales archives. Deeply struck from a high-relief obverse die and fascinatingly intricate reverse die. An attractive example of this incredibly rare series as compared to the double-daric denomination and finer than the sole example in sales archives from these dies. From the Dynasty Collection, #305.
