Qing Dynasty. Wen Zong (Xian Feng) Pattern 4 Cash ND (1862-1874) Certified 80 by Gong Bo Grading, Ili mint (Sinkiang Province), Hartill-22.1226, Jen-1670. 32.1mm. 10.8gm. Well-kept and sharp, this early-issue survivor is a good candidate for advanced Cash Type collectors. According to Hartill, in 1855 it was decided to stop the casting of all large coins and introduce "4 Cash" denominations in copper and iron. Regarding this particular type, in 1866 Ili was taken by rebels led by Mu'azzam Khan. Later, in 1871, the region was occupied by the Russians, who brought their currency into circulation until the Chinese reclaimed the territory. No more Cash coins were ever cast in Ili in the aftermath. Technically regular issues, Patterns were selected from the first casting of the molds made from Mother coins to be presented to the authorities for inspections. Some were distributed to local mints which would use them to design their own currency. Treasures from the W & L Collection HID09801242017 © 2023 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved
