Struck in commemoration of Chulalongkorn's age equaling his mother, Deb Sirindhra's, at the time of her passing at 28. Arguably the most famous and coveted sets in all of Thai numismatics and one instantly recognizable for its imposing and impressive emissions. Not only this, but as the first dated silver "coins" of Thailand, the set's historicity cannot be understated. While individual pieces struck for presentation come to market with scattered frequency, and usually to significant fanfare, it is no small feat to see one of possibly three known intact sets out of approximately eight sets total at auction. Included in this magnificent set are two of some of Thailand's largest pieces of bullet money, the Chang (80 Baht) and 1/2 Chang (40 Baht), both featuring hand-engraving, of which incredibly few ever come to market. In fact, as a testament to the incredible rarity of this set, this will be the first time our firm has handled anything larger than a 1/4 Chang (20 Baht) from this series. Each relays covetable gunmetal appearances and glossy surfaces, with so little evidence of handling only produced from an advanced preservation. Each engraved and stamped motif lingers with fine precision, each boasting a quality that is sure to garner the interest of only the most discerning Thai collector that is unlikely to be seen again anytime soon. The reign of King Chulalongkorn, also known as Rama V, was a pivotal period in Thailand's history, marked by extensive modernization and reform efforts. King Chulalongkorn is widely celebrated for his vision and commitment to modernizing the country, and saw significant advancements in various sectors, including education, infrastructure, administration, and the military that not only facilitated economic development but also symbolized Thailand's transition into a more modern and globally connected nation. King Chulalongkorn's reign laid the foundation for Thailand's continued progress and its ability to maintain its sovereignty in a rapidly changing world.
