Augsburg. Free City gold Ducat 1742-IT MS63 NGC, KM147, Fr-94. With the portrait, name and title of Karl VII. Featuring the pronounced bust of Emperor Karl VII who famously ended three centuries of Habsburg rule, this scarce gold issue depicts the iconic Augsburg pinecone in slightly modified form, in this case in the raised hand of a seated city goddess. The definition on this handsome piece is sharper than usual for lustrous gold, with clear delineation between the fields and devices. Expect elevated bidder interest for this Choice showpiece. Prince-Bishop Christian August of the House of Holstein-Gottorp died in 1726, leaving his son Charles Augustus to assume the seat. However, Charles Augustus’s sudden death in 1727 left the seat vacant once again, this time to be filled by another son, Adolf Frederick, who would also ascend the throne of Sweden in 1751. Ex.
