Alfonso VI Counterstamped 500 Reis ND (1663) VF35 NGC, KM36-38, LMB-102. Crowned 500 counterstamp applied on a Portugal João IV 400 Reis (Cruzado) from the Porto mint. A survivor of the minting experiments of King Pedro II, who repurposed the Cruzados and 1/2 Cruzados of Alfonso VI (his brother) and Joao IV (his father) in an attempt to reform hammered coins into milled types. For each type, Pedro minted new legends with the respective name of the king under whom the issues were first struck, which are nearly preserved in their entirety on the piece at hand. A bold counterstamp and a host with luminous legends. Ex. Piracicaloa Collection HID09801242017 © 2023 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved
