Description

SASANIAN KINGDOM. Kavad II (AD 628). AR drachm (31mm, 4.10 gm, 3h). NGC MS 4/5 - 3/5, brushed. YZ (Yazd), dated Regnal Year 2 (AD 628). Bust of Kavad II right, wearing mural crown with frontal crescent and korymbos set on crescent; ribbon over right shoulder, crescent and ribbon over left, stars flanking crown, single border / Fire altar with ribbons flanked by two attendants standing facing; star and crescent flanking flames, date to left, mint to right, single border. cf. Sunrise 990-992 (different mints). Göbl I/1. From the Tony Nozar Collection. Kavad (also known as Shiroe), the son of Khusrau II, had all his brothers and half brothers murdered to ensure he had no rivals to the throne. He reigned for only a few months and all his coins are dated year 2 even though his first year must have lasted for nearly four months. Kavad started peace negotiations with the Byzantine Emperor Heraclius (AD 610-641) ending the long and ultimately disastrous war started by Khusrau II. As a result of the peace the True Cross, which had been captured by the Sasanians, was returned to Jerusalem. HID09801242017 © 2023 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved
