Description

Saint Thomas and Prince Banco Nacional Ultramarino 20,000 Reis 2.1.1897 Pick 6 PMG Choice About Unc 58 EPQ. Saint Thomas and Price was a Portuguese Colony for approximately 500 years, and despite its small size, it was a vital component of the Portuguese Empire for centuries. It is located just off the west coast of Equatorial Africa and it is presently the second smallest sovereign state in Africa, after the Seychelles. The Banco Nacional Ultramarino issued its first colony-specific banknote series for Saint Thomas and Prince in 1897, and surviving examples are very rare today. This improbable and incredible banknote is virtually "as-issued", same for one fold down the middle. The paper retains full body, and both perforated sides remain almost perfectly even. At the time of cataloging, this is the single finest example graded in the PMG Population Report of a mere two notes submitted. 19th Century banknote rarities for Africa are often found in severely degraded condition, but that is surely not the case here. A type note seldom seen, and a historic remnant from the small island nation. One of the most beautiful and scarce Banco Nacional Ultramarino types we have had the privilege to offer.
