Viking Kingdom of York. Cnut Cunnetti Penny ND (900-905) MS63 NGC, York mint, S-993, N-501. 1.35gm. CNVT REX, patriarchal cross, with a pellet in angles of the smaller cross. +CVNNETTI, small cross. Attractive old hoard toning, practically as struck. Privately purchased from York Coins. The accompanying dealer's ticket suggests this coin is most probably from the Cuerdale Hoard, discovered in Lancashire, 1840. The hoard was discovered by workmen on the banks of the river Ribble near Preston. Consisting of around a 1,000 ozs of silver and over 7,000 coins, it is still today the largest hoard of Viking silver ever found in the British Isles, and the largest in Europe outside of Russia. The lion's share of the hoard was eventually allocated to the British Museum. The coinage of the Viking kingdom of York during this period is almost unknown outside of this find. 'Cunnetti' may correlate with Hunedeus, a Norse leader at the end of the ninth century.
