Description

Domitian, as Augustus (AD 81-96). AE sestertius (35mm, 25.20 gm, 7h). NGC XF S 5/5 - 4/5, Fine Style. Rome, AD 88. IMP CAES DOMIT AVG GERM P M TR P VIII CENS PER P P, laureate head of Domitian right / COS XIIII LVD SAECA POP, Domitian seated right on stool set on low platform; two citizens standing left, offering wine which is poured on the ground; FRVG AC inscribed on platform, temple in the background, S C in exergue. RIC II.1, 375. The boldly rendered and dynamic designs are made all the more intriguing by the charcoal patina and shadows of jade. This issue commemorates the rituals and events associated with the saeculum, which was celebrated with the Saecular Games in AD 88.
