Description

MACEDONIAN KINGDOM. Alexander III the Great (336-323 BC). AV stater (18mm, 8.58 gm, 12h). NGC XF 5/5 - 3/5. Posthumous issue of Abydus, 323-317 BC. Head of Athena right, hair flowing in loose waves, over left shoulder, and upswept at temple, wearing necklace and triple-crested Corinthian helmet pushed back on head, short intersecting crest ends, bowl decorated with coiled serpent right / ΑΛEΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ, Nike advancing left, wreath in outstretched right hand, stylis cradled in left arm; MH monogram above pentagram in outer left field, scallop shell in left field below wing. Price 1525. Boldly struck details are nicely centered and visible on the bright flan.
